Mise-en-scene

Mise-en-scene means everything within frame.

This includes the lighting of a scene, the costumes people are wearing,
the colour of what they are wearing, facial expressions etc.

In Jaws the opening scene it starts with teenagers sitting on a beach.
The sun is setting and it is getting dark quickly this is isolating the characters because the only source of light they have is a fire which is their 'safe zone'.
The couple sit away from everyone else and away from the fire. This is making these two even more isolated than everyone else.
When they get up to move they start to run alongside a fence, this signifies them being trapped like a prison or cage.
The only sounds that you can hear are natural e.g. the people talking, laughing, music, waves crashing, footsteps, panting.
When they move away they leave all the main sounds behind and move away from their 'safe zone' where most people are.
