Mise-en-scene

Mise-en-scene means everything within frame.

This includes the lighting of a scene, the costumes people are wearing,
the colour of what they are wearing, facial expressions etc.

In Jaws the opening scene it starts with teenagers sitting on a beach.
The sun is setting and it is getting dark quickly this is isolating the characters because the only source of light they have is a fire which is their 'safe zone'.
The couple sit away from everyone else and away from the fire. This is making these two even more isolated than everyone else.
When they get up to move they start to run alongside a fence, this signifies them being trapped like a prison or cage.
The only sounds that you can hear are natural e.g. the people talking, laughing, music, waves crashing, footsteps, panting.
When they move away they leave all the main sounds behind and move away from their 'safe zone' where most people are.

The Excorcist Camera Angles

How are generic elements and camera angle used to create suspense in the attic scene of the exorcist

  • camera angle from the actors point of view to show what she sees
  • the camera angles only show the actors face to show her fear
  • no sound so you listen out for what she is looking out for
  • the camera films her from behind objects as if something is watching her
  • the scene is at night and the lights don't work so she uses a candle
  •  the woman is a isolated, stereotypical victim she is young, vulnerable woman and by herself
  • when the man comes up the suspense drops immediately because he is another noise that can explain what has happened
  • the scene is in the middle of the night and it is dark so you are expecting something to happen
  • the title of the film tells you something bad is going to happen at one point
  • she is filmed from above to make her look weak
  • she is also filmed from behind to make it look like she is being followed
  • she is looking at things by candle light which creates shadows so you don't have a clear view of what is around her

Favourite Film

Dirty Dancing is one of my favourite films. One of the reasons I love it so much is because of the different types of music and dancing that is in it.
It is a really feel-good film that you can watch over and over and not get bored.
